"[Am I overreacting?] Pet/House Sitter used my huge block of cheese, pets got it, she threw away and didn’t tell me"

+ Did I by chance accidentally leave out the cheddar before we left in a hurry? I know I had a large brick of it and can't find it Sorry yeah, I ate some and then left it unattended. cat knocked it down and he and dog both had scratched up all along the outside Text Message • SMS

Hired a new house sitter (Rover), who helped herself to a 2.5lb block of tillamook cheddar. The dog and cat got at it and she threw it all away without telling me.

After thinking I'd gone crazy looking for my cheese brick, I figured I'd text her and got that response.

AIO??? Why wouldn't you just tell me? Or ask? Was she seriously hoping I wouldn't notice? Also, what else happened that I don't know about?
  • 06
==> Do I tip anyway? Is it worth leaving a not great review (there were a few other weird but minor things too)? She has only 5star reviews and I would be the one to ruin it. Or just let it be and not hire her again?

Successful_Craft_431 If you're going to have strangers come in your home and take care of your animals you should get indoor cameras. Did she stay overnight or just pop in while you were gone? Whenever I've house/pet sat they always say "help yourself to anything" but to be fair I've never done it for someone I didn't know. What were the other minor and weird things? Cheese alone, I'd let it go if she did a good job otherwise. I'm curious about the other things tho, that may change my answer.

StrictForever7193 OP Can't edit so.... Stay was 5 days, I did NOT mention/give permission on helping herself, I just said she could use any pots and pans to cook (I don't mind it's just the non- communication). "The couple other weird things" Orange cat is very food driven so there are child locks on the cabinets and the trash can is outside on the deck. I had made it pretty clear he will go for anything unattended.

Judging from the trash can, it looks like she had made her own paper garbage bag of trash, and there were jeans/ jean material on top (???) • When home we found a plastic McDonalds cup on the floor, and also another one just left in the closet. Also a plastic food container on floor

    • The cat food bag was moved from our "food closet" into the cupboard with all the clean cups just to be like 5 ft closer to feeding space. Which also doesn't have a child lock. Like I said just a little weird or annoying but the big issue was not communicating. Also my $15 cheese lol

Kangaroowrangler_02 Did she even have permission to open anything or help herself is my first question.
  • 14
    StrictForever7193 OP No
  • 15
Lazy-Bar-4871 YOR. It's cheese. I'd be more upset that the dog ate that much cheese, not that they ate some.

StrictForever7193 OP To everyone thinking I'm upset about the cheese, that's not it!!! I'm upset about the non- communication and how it felt like she knew she messed up and didn't say anything, hoping I wouldn't notice a very large block of cheese missing (it's the absurdity, and why I mention the size). I'd like to have known if my pets ate food they don't normally eat, and when I dug out the block it looked like they ate a LOT of it.

wannabejetsetter This is a $13 block of cheese, right? Without understanding the full nuance of the house sitting arrangement (how many days? did you tell her to help yourself?) I'd say it could be a bit of an overreaction if she was watching for multiple days/weeks and had been told to snack on items left around.

Few Pea8503 Honestly- I say let it go. She was upfront and honest about it when you asked. Tell her you would like her to ask in the future and/or bring her own food. If she is chill and respectful no need to make it a big thing
